MATH. 115: Introduction to Probability and Statistics

Prerequisite: Intermediate Algebra. This is a mandatory prerequisite and cannot be waived. Do not ask the instructor to do so. You must provide written proof (report card or transcript) of having passed this course or higher. You may also fulfill the prerequisite by challenge exam (see the department chair) or by placement test (contact the Testing Office at 415-485-9469 to schedule a placement test).

An introduction to descriptive statistics, probability and sampling distributions, estimation, data analysis and hypothesis testing.

This course fulfills the mathematics entrance requirement for the California State Universities and for some of the majors of the Universities of California. This course is fully transferable as a lower division course to all of these universities, as well as colleges and universities (public and private) in other states. Please check with your particular institution to guarantee credit there.

This course uses examples that deal with human behavior. As such there may be examples that present data associated with human sexuality, drugs and other contemporary topics. If you take offense at reading about these topics or feel that they are not appropriate for an academic college-level class, then do not take this course!

In addition, this course involves considerable reading and writing. The ability to clearly communicate your ideas in a well-constructed, written essay is essential to success in this class.
